Full Moon Ritual to Release Negativity and Destroy Karmas: 3 Powerful Mantras

The beauty of the full moon, the vibe, that extra spark in our eyes that ignites when the full moon comes…all of that energy can be harnessed into a very powerful sadhana. Sadhana, to summarize, is basically your spiritual practice.

But what does that mean and how can it help you? The full moon is one of the most auspicious occasions where we can make a practical plan to advance our essence, to rejuvenate, and most importantly grow as a person. These practices will help you release negativity and destroy our negative karmas.

Harness the Power of the Full Moon with these Affirmations and Meditations

What I will share with you in this blog is how to harness the power of the full moon and create a ritual that you can count on each and every month to bring you a life-changing experience.

These rituals are centered around Lord Shiva because of his association with the moon and transformative power. And also because he is the super cool, hemp-smoking ascetic who is easily pleased by all…yes, that too! :)

Lord Shiva and the Full Moon

In my line of expertise and study, I have been trained in Hinduism to celebrate each full moon with Lord Shiva and the Goddess Lakshmi. The full moon is called Purnima in Hinduism. Everyone can feel that this is a very transformative time, hence the need for rituals to solidify these feelings that we have when the moon is full.

You can read the detailed post here about Lord Shiva and who He is.

Back in the olden Vedic times, elaborate rituals were performed on these auspicious occasions with Homa fires (ceremonial fires where the chanting is continually repeated while offerings such as grains and flowers are thrown into the fire). To replicate this process in our modern times, we simply use a candle, yes! And some incense of course.

The result? You have a beautiful and transformative ritual all laid out for you in this post that you can use to literally transform your life.

The Full Moon Ritual-Step by Step

Let’s dig in!

Things to include in your ritual:

  1. Affirmations which are provided below.

  2. Light a candle, the candle is our representation of a Vedic Homa fire.

  3. Incense and Sage for Smudging.

  4. Meditation.

  5. Worship of Shiva with Mantras.

  6. Worship of Lakshmi with Mantras.

  7. Use of a Mala if you have one.

Extras: Do you have a singing bowl and crystals? Bring those too for your full moon ritual!

Your full moon ritual is about to gain so much more shape and clarity. Real quick, do you have children at home? I have always included my two boys in all of my spiritual practices and rituals since the day they entered the womb. Kids love this kind of stuff, so even though they can interrupt our concentration, (and let’s face it, that can be annoying)  include them! It will benefit all of us.

The Ritual Procedure

Step 1: Get Set Up

The first thing you want to do is make sure you are all set up with the “props” I listed above. Grab any candle, get your mala (if you don’t have one it’s ok), your lighter, incense, and something to play the mantras on. If you can pick a better sound system than your phone, that would be better.

Have the recommended mantras I have linked below pulled up on a few separate tabs so they are ready to go.

And the bonus of singing bowls and crystals are extra fun:)

If you have a sacred space or meditation corner, it’s always best to do these rituals in that space because it already has the vibrations to give you a jump start.

Step 2: Set Your Intention

First, and this is key, set your intention: what do you want to get out of this ritual on the full moon?

Again, full moons are extremely potent, so think about your intention carefully. A good intention to use for full moons is letting go of what no longer serves you.

Repeat this affirmation before you begin:

With this ritual, I am letting go what no longer serves me. I am free of the negative karmas that bind me.

What else could be your intention? You can also think of the full moon as new beginnings and set your intention to follow through with a new habit or success in a new endeavor. Write it down and place it beside you for your ritual.

Step 3: Start by lighting your candle and herbals.

Next, light incense and wave it in a clockwise direction in front of any sacred pictures or art you have. You can also smudge at this point as well which really helps clear out any negativity in your space. Always smudge first-make the bad vibes go bye-bye, then incense second, and bring the good vibes in!

If you need help with smudging, read my step-by-step post here.

Make sure to smudge your body and circle around your body with incense as well.

If you are adding extra crystals to your space for your ritual, set them up around you and smudge them as well.

Bonus: Play your singing bowl a few times if you have one. Let the tones ring out.

Step 4: Breathing

Take 3-4 long deep breaths, sitting up straight, start to calm your mind, and get focused.

Focus on your breath. Watch it go in and out and in and out for a few minutes. If you are comfortable with meditation, meditate as long as you want.

Mantras to Lord Shiva

Step 5: Repitition of Mantras

Next, start your mantras to Lord Shiva. Invoke him with a prayer and affirmation.

You can use this affirmation: Lord Shiva, help me on this full moon to manifest your grace and benefits. May I let go of what no longer serves me. Help me on my path in this life. Cleanse my negative karmas and help me to lead a life full of peace and blessedness.

Then start this Mruntanjaya Mantra:

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe

sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam .

urvārukamiva bandhanān

mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt ..

English translation: We worship Lord Shiva the three-eyed one, the one who is the master of all senses and qualities and the one who is the sustainer of all growth. May he release us from the bondage of death, just as a ripened cucumber is released from its stalk, and may he (not deprive us of immortality) grant us immortality.

This one is a bit of a tongue twister in the beginning, but with practice, you will get it! And feel it’s amazing effects.

Play the video and follow along. This one is most efficacious in my opinion. It is often recommended for health problems, disease, depression and money problems. Chant and pray to Lord Shiva, remember He is the easiest to please. You will know it and feel it.

If you have your mala (you can read how to properly use one here): start the mala while repeating this mantra.

Shivastakam Mantra

Next you can just sit and quietly listen to the Shivastakam. This is another powerful mantra known to heal and remove all problems in life.

Lakshmi Mantra

But wait, there’s more! Don’t forget that the Goddess Laxmi is also known for being super auspicious to worship on full moon nights.

This is her potent Beej (seed) mantra. This is very powerful and transformative. Lakshmi is the Goddess of Wealth, but that doesn’t just mean material wealth. For her devotees and spiritual aspirants, we ask her to bless with abundance in spiritual devotion, knowledge, strength and stamina. Mother is VERY helpful.

Play this to finish your ritual.

Om Hrim Shri Lakshmibhyo Namaha

Ending the Ritual and Closing Prayer and Affirmation

Step 6: Ending Prayer

Now that you have completed the ritual. Say a closing prayer with hands at your heart. You can say whatever you want to the Universe, your Self, Shiva, or Lakshmi.

Pray that you are grateful for this help on the full moon and may your spiritual practices bear fruit.

Repeat the affirmation: I let go of what no longer serves me and I move forward in my spiritual evolution.

Give thanks to the Universe and feel the transformation in your heart.

Don’t forget to cleanse your crystals and mala on this sacred full moon.

The Result

The result of all this? The full moon will amplify the fruits of your efforts. Shiva will cleanse our karmas, we just have to ask. He will listen. Your intentions and affirmations are now complete, the results will come!

And wow, talk about raising the vibrations, you just did it! You tangibly raised the vibrations in your home and your soul.
